Volunteers needed to serve on City Boards and Commissions

The City of Xenia is looking for qualified applicants to fill several critical Boards and Commissions that help provide important governance and direction on City policies, procedures, personnel and services. Vacancies exist on the Board of Zoning Appeals, the Board for Recreation, Arts, and Cultural Activities, the Civil Service Commission, and the Traffic Commission.

Each Board and Commission has unique responsibilities key to the provision of City services.

The Board of Zoning Appeals hears, reviews, and decides on variance requests and appeals of any administrative decision where it is alleged there is an error in any administrative order, requirement, decision, or determination made by the City Planner, Code Enforcement Officer, PZC, City Engineer, or other staff member authorized to make such decisions or orders. It is a quasi-judicial board and its decisions are final and only appealable in a court of law. There is one vacancy on the Board that must be filled.

The Board for Recreation, Arts, and Cultural Activities reviews, recommends, and implements recreation services including new park development plans, assists with regulations, policies, or guidelines for entities providing recreational, artistic, and cultural services, and reviews and recommends subdivision plans for the dedication of parkland or a fee in lieu of parkland dedication.  There is one vacancy on the Board that must be filled.

The Civil Service Commission shall have authority to see that employees in the classified service are appointed and retained on the basis of merit and fitness as governed by the City Charter, City ordinances, or the general laws of the State of Ohio. The primary duty of the Civil Service Commission is to provide open competitive testing to the public for any classified position with the City of Xenia. The Commission also oversees promotional processes for various City of Xenia Departments. There is one vacancy on the Commission that must be filled.

The Traffic Commission coordinates traffic activities and carries on educational activities in traffic matters; receives from City staff recommendations based on upon sound engineering judgement; and in accordance with the Ohio Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Streets and Highways, receives complaints having to do with traffic matters; makes monthly reports to the City Council; and recommends to City Council and other city officials ways and means for improving traffic conditions and the administration and enforcement of traffic regulations. There is one vacancy on the Commission that must be filled.
